Robert Best was born in Niagara-on-the-Lake in 1901 and entered UTS in 1910. He enlisted in the Central Ontario Regiment of the Canadian Infantry in 1918, claiming to be two years older than he really was. He was training at Exhibition Camp in Toronto when he fell ill with a fatal case of spinal meningitis. He is buried in Saint Mark’s Anglican Cemetery in his hometown and commemorated on Niagara-on-the-Lake cenotaph. The Annals noted that “this young soldier’s life furnishes an excellent example of the splendid spirit of our Canadian boys which had so much to do with the ultimate triumph of the allied arms.”
